The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
