Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
